What happened
On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171 crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 of 242 passengers and crew plus 19 people on the ground — India's worst aviation disaster in fifteen years. International aviation standards require a preliminary report within 30 days and a final report within 12 months. One year later, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has missed the final report deadline. The AAIB sent the aircraft's GE Aerospace engines to the United States for examination; they have not yet been fully analyzed. The Civil Aviation Minister had told Parliament the report was "expected very soon" just weeks before the anniversary. Congress called the delay "inexplicable and inexcusable." A separate report from Business Today noted this is not the first time India has missed a crash probe deadline. The engines have not returned from America.
