The BJP manifesto promises ₹18,000 crore to make Assam — a state that floods catastrophically every single year because the Brahmaputra exists — completely flood-free within two years. The river, which drains the entire Tibetan Plateau, was not available for comment.
In their 2026 Assam election manifesto launched on March 31, the BJP unveiled the Badh Mukt Assam Mission: a ₹18,000 crore commitment to make Assam flood-free in the first two years of their next term. For context, Assam floods every monsoon season without exception, displacing millions annually. The Brahmaputra — one of the largest rivers on Earth, draining 580,000 square kilometres across four countries — has been flooding Assam since before recorded history. The manifesto promises to rebuild embankments using modern technologies, stabilise riverbanks, and reclaim eroded land. Previous governments have spent tens of thousands of crores on flood control since the 1950s. The floods keep coming. But this time, apparently, ₹18,000 crore and two years should do it. The manifesto was released by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman alongside 30 other promises including 2 lakh jobs and a Uniform Civil Code, because why stop at defying hydrology when you can also reform personal law.
