What happened
On July 4, Himanta Biswa Sarma posted a dramatic image of Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, the Russian 'rooftopping' duo famous for illegally scaling skyscrapers, standing atop a tower with a banner reading 'Assam: India's Fastest Growing State.' The photo was a digitally customised version of the pair's real, much-covered climb up the Empire State Building in New York — a stunt during which Kuznetsov proposed to Nikolau at 1,454 feet, and for which the two were subsequently arrested by police. Nothing about the image involved Assam, Guwahati, or any structure in India; it borrowed the daredevils' viral fame and grafted on a state marketing slogan. The post still drew widespread attention online, which was presumably the point, even if the growth story it illustrated was literally staged on a building the state government has no jurisdiction over.
