What happened

On July 13, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved a 'comprehensive reorganisation' creating 17 new tehsils across Ladakh, taking the total from 15 to 32 — on top of the five new districts carved out just in April. It's the second major administrative subdivision in three months, landing weeks after the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance held a joint bandh protesting the Centre's delay on statehood and Sixth Schedule assurances made back in May. Officials describe the move as bringing governance 'closer to the people,' citing travel distances of up to 300 km to reach a tehsil office. Kargil alone gets seven new tehsildars; what it actually asked for remains unaddressed.
