On World Environment Day, the Prime Minister laid foundation stones for Rs 885 crore worth of jetty infrastructure in Lakshadweep, promising it would bring "revolutionary change" to a union territory whose combined population is smaller than the intake of a single IIT.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated and laid foundation stones for four infrastructure projects in Lakshadweep on June 5, 2026, including new port developments and multipurpose jetties on Kalpeni and Kadmat islands. The revolutionary changes promised by these projects include: year-round docking capacity for cruise vessels up to 300 metres in length, improved fish handling facilities, more reliable fuel distribution, and a better ice supply. Lakshadweep has a total population of 64,473 people spread across 36 islands — approximately the size of a mid-sized provincial town, but with considerably more biodiversity and, until a PM visit in January 2024 briefly turned it into a diplomatic incident involving the Maldives, considerably less attention. The foundation stones were laid with much ceremonial gravity. The jetties, and the revolution, remain under construction.
