What happened
The State BJP office in Jaipur hosted Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and State Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar for a press conference on June 11, 2026. At 3:57 PM, the lights went out. Then they went out again. Then a third time. Attendees illuminated the proceedings with mobile phone flashlights while the Railways Minister gamely continued speaking into the dark. Minister Nagar, whose portfolio involves keeping the lights on for Rajasthan's 7.5 crore residents, immediately ordered a probe into why the lights had gone out at his own event. An inquiry committee was constituted under Additional Chief Engineer Dashrath Singh. Two days later, an Assistant Engineer and an electrician were suspended, and a charge sheet was issued to a third official. The technical cause was traced to a gas leak repair at a 220 kV substation that caused a current imbalance and tripped two 250 MVA transformers. The broader cause — the Energy Minister's office being in Rajasthan — was not addressed.
