SM Infra Ltd built a retaining wall along Sikkim's Luing-Ranka Road on loose, dumped soil. The wall declined to retain anything. Officials responded by documenting half a missing road, then issuing a tarpaulin directive.
On May 4, 2026, a joint inspection team arrived at Silting Dara on the Luing-Ranka Road in Gangtok district after a complaint from a local resident. What they found was instructive: a retaining wall, constructed by SM Infra Ltd, had been built on loose and dumped soil, and had duly collapsed. Nearly half the road stretch had been washed away. Debris had been stacked in a manner that blocked natural drainage channels, ensuring water had nowhere to flow except through the road itself. The inspection was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mahendra Chettri, Area MLA Kala Rai, and the Project Manager of SM Infra Ltd. The Project Manager was directed to immediately cover the affected slide area with tarpaulins and initiate urgent restoration work. The inspection team stopped short of commenting on whether the tarpaulins should also be placed on stable ground.
