Travel & Tourism Development Index
The conditions that let a travel and tourism sector develop, across enabling environment, policy, infrastructure, natural and cultural resources, and sustainability.
Travel & Tourism Development Index: 2007 ranked 65 of 124; 2008 ranked 65 of 130; 2009 ranked 62 of 133; 2011 ranked 68 of 139; 2013 ranked 65 of 140; 2015 ranked 52 of 141; 2017 ranked 40 of 136; 2019 ranked 34 of 140; 2021 ranked 54 of 117; 2024 ranked 39 of 119.
What the publisher changed
- 2021: The Travel & Tourism Development Index replaced the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index in 2021, and the field shrank from 140 economies to 117. Everything before this point is the older index.
Coverage
India only; 117-141 economies, ten editions from 2007.
Limitations
Published every two years, so the figure can be well out of date between editions. Editions up to 2019 are the predecessor Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, and the field fell from 140 economies to 117 when the index was rebuilt, which flatters the 2021 rank. Ranks and economy counts before 2017 are the commonly cited published figures rather than values confirmed against a World Economic Forum primary source, because the report archive is not openly served. The index rewards resource endowment, which large and geographically varied countries score well on regardless of policy.
